Since 2017, VA (Public & Science) has been co-ordinating campaigns to promote evidence-informed policy making and the use of research-based knowledge in society, including March for Science and Hur vet du det? (How do you know that?). Together with 60 organisations, we have formulated three concrete pieces of advice for Sweden’s next government.

Strengthen Citizen involvement and public engagement in Horizon Europe!

The current draft of the EU’s next framework programme for research and innovation is not addressing the needs to involve and engage citizens and civil society in research and innovation enough. VA has therefore encouraged the Swedish government and Swedish members of the European Parliament to act to make Horizon Europe a more citizen-oriented programme.

VA leading campaign for more evidence-based election debate

Politicians who make use of science, create better policies. But they must also take many things into account at the same time: science, values, economics, society’s opinions and attitudes. Some of these have more influence on certain issues than others and it is important to know why. Politicians need to be open about what they are basing their proposals and decisions on, and to be able to access and assess scientific evidence.

VA’s response to public consultation on the interim evaluation of Horizon 2020

Between October 2016 and January 2017, the European Commission ran a public stakeholder consultation in the context of the interim evaluation of Horizon 2020 in the form of a questionnaire. The aim is to improve the implementation of Horizon 2020 and set the scene for the future discussions on the next EU research and innovation funding post-2020. Here is VA’s completed questionnaire.

Science-society interaction: a key theme in Swedish research bill

In November, the Swedish Government presented its new research policy bill ‘Collaboration for knowledge – for society’s challenges and strengthened competitiveness’. The bill looks at the direction of research policy with a ten-year perspective. Strengthening collaboration between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), society and business is a key theme, with the bill explicating stating that “science-society interaction will be enhanced, promoted and rewarded”, a move that is welcomed by VA (Public & Science).
