ECSA 2018 – post-conference reflections on citizen science

The second international conference of the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) was held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 4–5 June 2018. VA’s Fredrik Brounéus and Dick Kasperowski from the University of Gothenburg gained inspiration for their current work building a Swedish national portal for citizen science. And, as often with conferences, they returned home with more questions than answers.

VA goes Down Under to share experiences at PCST 2018

New Zealand was the host of the 15th global PCST science communication conference that took place in April 2018. Two VA colleagues travelled to the coastal city of Dunedin to present some of VA’s work in citizen science, scientific literacy and public engagement. The conference gathered around 400 delegates from over 40 countries to discuss the latest practices in the diverse and growing field of science communication.

Awareness of science shops varies across Europe and between stakeholders

Awareness of science shops and community-based participatory research is much higher in Western Europe, than in other parts of Europe. Researchers are more likely to be familiar with these concepts than community organisations, the main beneficiaries, too. These are some of the results of a survey conducted by SciShops, a new Horizon 2020 project promoting the growth of science shops and community-based research in Europe. VA is a partner in SciShops and was responsible for conducting the survey.

Sökes: Lärare till en testgrupp för material om bioekonomi i EU-projektet BLOOM

EU-projektet Bloom har som mål att öka allmänhetens intresse och kunskap om bioekonomi. I projektet ingår 12 europeiska partners däribland Vetenskap & Allmänhet, VA. Projektet ska bland annat ta fram undervisningsmaterial inom bioekonomi och European Schoolnet söker nu 20 lärare inom fysik, biologi, matematik, teknik, eller kemi från skolor i Belgien, Israel, Italien, Polen, Portugal, Israel, Kroatien, Spanien, Sverige, Tyskland och Österrike som vill ingå i ett pilotlärarlag.

What does trust in science actually mean and why is it key? This was the topic of an event held in Brussels on 22 November, which explored the results and implications from three European surveys of public perception of science, including the VA Barometer.

VA to help the bioeconomy to bloom across Europe

VA is a partner in BLOOM, a new EU-funded project, aimed at raising public awareness and interest in the bioeconomy. Through dialogue and co-creation activities, the project will develop and strengthen regional networks in order to foster greater understanding about the potential of the bioeconomy.
