Public dialogues, citizen science, game development and co-creation activities. For 4.5 years, VA (Public & Science) together with 8 European partners has been testing different ways to involve the public and other stakeholders in the research process. The aim of the EU ORION Open Science project was to investigate how research and funding organisations can ”open up” the way they fund and do research.
In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, dialogue between science and society is more important than ever. This year’s EuroScience Open Forum, a hybrid of in-person and online events held 2-6 September, provided a key international platform to discuss and share experiences on issues such as communicating scientific uncertainty and maintaining public trust in science.
VA (Public & Science) has been appointed to coordinate the Falling Walls Engage Hub Sweden. The network is designed to connect science engagement practitioners from across the world and provide a platform for exchange and dialogue on bridging the gap between science and society.
VA has signed Ecsite’s open letter to the European Commissioner for Research and Innovation, Carlos Mœdas. The letter calls for an inversion of the “top-down” dissemination of scientific results in favour of involving citizens in the co-creation and co-design of the next EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. Including VA, the open letter is endorsed by 135 networks and organisations.
VA (Public & Science) ran its first pop-up Science Shop on 1 July during Almedalen Week in Visby, Sweden. Throughout the day, researchers from Swedish research organisations encouraged visitors to stop by the Pop-Up Science Shop to discover how research can be used to inform solutions to societal issues and to identify questions that they’d like to be answered by research.
Researchers in 29 Swedish cities shared their passion for research and science at this year’s European Researchers’ Night celebrations. The annual Europe-wide science festival, in 2018 held on 28 & 29 September, featured activities in over 370 cities in Europe.
Interest in life sciences research is generally high among citizens. The three most accepted purposes of using genome editing are related to the medical field. These are results from a survey and a report on ”Public attitudes to life sciences research in six European countries” conducted by VA in Sweden and CEITEC in the Czech Republic as part of the ORION Open Science project.
