The tragedy of the leaking oil well in Gulf of Mexico continues. BP is hoping its latest capping scheme will succeed. But in the meantime all we can do is watch, wait and hope.

Right?

Well, no. Why not come up with a solution? BP is dedicating some of its resources to heading a team asking for ideas from the public. It has so far received over 32,000 ideas.

This is crowd-sourcing in action. Originally used in a business context, the term ”crowd-sourcing” refers to the using ideas from a very wide but non-expert audience to try and solve intractable problems that are baffling the experts. The crowd has a new perspective, has an enormous collective imagination and can suggest something completely unexpected.

However there have been some criticisms of BP for not releasing enough detailed technical information about pressure, pipe diameters, depths and so on.

As summed up by Prof Steven Sears, chairman of the petroleum engineering department at Louisiana State University, it is unlikely that ”a random guy with an English degree” will crack this problem. It is probably going to be someone with a science background. Perhaps ”… someone who has some tangential experience – it isn’t some experience that BP thinks to tap.”

Many parts of the media have ridiculed the whole idea – “If the experts can’t solve it then what is the point of asking us?” they cry.

Personally I salute BP for this – the cost is minimal and although the chances are perhaps small they are exploring all avenues, swallowing their pride and asking the whole of society for help.

So if you have any ideas, let BP know today! You never know, they might not have thought of it…..

You have probably heard of the so-called “CSI effect”. Forensic science made popular by TV programmes featuring brave and handsome gun-toting forensic scientists catching the criminals armed with a swab and microscope….?

No bad thing of course and no one really believes it’s true. Do they?

Well, yes they do. And it is having some far reaching consequences.

A recent article in the Economist magazine highlights American research that shows how TV programmes about forensic science have affected the American legal system. The most obvious problem in the court rooms is that jurors think they understand about forensic science when they do not.

The whole legal process is being slowed down considerably. Jury selection is taking longer to eliminate people who judge science by television standards; prosecutors are introducing a “negative evidence” witness to explain why types of evidence are not found at the scene; and there is a lot of time spent explaining probability – despite getting 100% certain matches from a micro-spot of blood on CSI, this is rarely the case in real life.

A secret fan of CSI myself, I particularly like the wonderful machine which can identify a sample of anything at all (mud from the far west side of New York, clay from Ireland, sand from Sweden….). You just put in your sample, press a button and hey presto! A match is found. This, unfortunately, is also pure fiction. Something else some jury members are surprised by.

Criminals also watch TV and there has been evidence of more glove wearing, more bleaching and less envelope licking at crime scenes around the USA.

But jurors are questioning more, which can never be a bad thing. And hopefully the judges and lawyers are up to the job of answering their concerns. Let’s just hope they themselves do not rely on the TV for their knowledge of forensic science.

Esther Crooks

Research by Evan Durnal of the University of Central Missouri’s Criminal Justice Department. The conclusions have just been published in Forensic Science International.

The flight ban is lifted, regulations have been reviewed. The question is, how did science come out of this crisis?

I am afraid to say, not very well. At least not in Public Relations terms. Watching a popular satirical comedy show on TV (Have I got News for You) the other night I was distraught to hear the events interpreted as follows:

Scientists decide ash is too dangerous for planes to fly through. All flights are grounded.

Airline companies not pleased and start putting pressure on government to lift ban.

Government puts pressure on scientists.

Science changes its conclusions under political/commercial pressure.

Ban is lifted.

Of course this is not what happened. The airline companies were not pleased and therefore carried out 96 hours of test flights. They worked with the plane manufacturers and the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) to determine what exactly a safe level of ash in the atmosphere is and set new tolerance limits (the original limit was zero).

However this more complicated and less adversarial story was perhaps not as newsworthy.

Or perhaps the CAA just needs a better PR person.

Alan Alda, the Hollywood actor best known for his roles in MASH and the West Wing is giving scientists improvisation lessons.

At the Centre for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University, New York., Mr Alda has been helping graduate science students improve their communication skills through theatrical games and improvisation methods. The aim is not to run them into actors but to help them speak more openly and freely with the public. One student said that the course had made her “focus more on who I’m talking to and less on what I’m talking about…… and it becomes easier for them to follow my explanation and become excited by it”.

This weekend will mark the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission. Anniversaries are always good opportunities for attracting attention and so hopefully we will all be discussing the wonders of space exploration over coffee this weekend.

One natural question over the years has been, “But what if it hadn’t worked?” The long-standing theory that the capsule with the frozen bodies of the astronauts would have floated off into space as an everlasting monument to the space mission has now been shown to be untrue.

An article in the Times newspaper this weekend reports how a team of experts in Philadelphia have carried out computer simulations to show that in fact – much less dramatically – the spacecraft and the (dead) astronauts would have been pulled in into the earth’s atmosphere by the moons gravity and incinerated after only 5 weeks.

There is little doubt though that the rescue of the Apollo 13 is one of NASAs finest moments and something to be wondered at still. Perhaps Mr Obama may be regretting cutting the manned space programme as he watches the anniversary coverage. (Or maybe not, the man has some tough decisions to make!).

If, like me, you know most of what you know about Apollo 13 form the film (released 1995 and starring Tom Hanks if you missed it), you may be surprised to know that those immortal words, “Houston, we have a problem” were misquoted by Mr Hanks, and were in fact “Houston, we’ve had a problem”. Not quite the same somehow…

And incidentally there are some amazing photos on the NASA site of the current mission’s space walks.

Vetenskapsakademien, Kungl. Skogs- och Lantbruksakademien, Kungl. Ingenjörsvetenskapsakademien och Vetenskapsrådet.

The European Commission yesterday approved a genetically modified potato to be grown in the EU.
This is only the second GM product that has been allowed to be grown commercially here. The first, Monsanto’s MON 810 maize, was cleared back in 1998.
The potato is approved for industrial use only. It has been designed by the German company BASF for special properties of its starch.
There has of course been an outcry from environmentalists, as well as several MEPs and European leaders. However a statement from the Commission insisting that its decision was based on ”a considerable volume of sound science” sounded very confident, so perhaps we can look forward to a lively and evenly matched debate.
In past, voices expressing concern about the environment, biodiversity and cross-pollination have tended to be heard more than those focusing on developments which can reduce water and energy shortages and pesticide use, and in many poorer countries tackle some problems concerning malnutrition.
The news had not reached the front pages yet. I hope it will and that we see a proper informed debate about GM crops.

Back in 1998, the media was dominated by the “news” that the MMR vaccine can cause bowel disease and autism.
The result was panic and a steep drop in the number of vaccinations and a dramatic rise in the incidence of measles.
The story has resurfaced numerous times over the years with each new “development” generally making the front pages.
So it was with some surprise whilst browsing the BBC news website, I found tucked away in the Health news section, a short article announcing the Lancet (who originally published the paper) has finally accepted the research findings to be false.
Finally? Has it taken this generally esteemed journal all this time to reach this decision? And I see they are not trumpeting this particular news story from the roof tops.
It seems “Scare story not true” is not a headline thought to be of much interest to the public.
