In 1835 the first geographical survey of the UK began.

175 years later, the British Geographical Survey (BGS) is showing it is moving with the times by launching the iGeology App which allows you to see at a glance the geology beneath your feet (but only if you are in the UK I’m afraid).

The first survey was carried out because of both natural curiosity, and the need to know what is underneath our feet for the building of railways, canals, coal mines and other industrial sites.

Today the public are still likely to use this App of out curiosity, though perhaps it will also reveal a few bits of useful information for house-buyers or gold prospectors.
